Captivity Narrative Essay Example for Free

Imprisonment Narrative Essay Imprisonment accounts were generally mainstream in the 1700’s by both European and American populaces. Bondage accounts in America depicted either whites subjugated by savages or the African oppressed by the white slave proprietor. Bondage stories were composed to show the peruser of one’s encounters while being in imprisonment. Two creators who composed a few these stories are Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano. Mary Rowlandson’s account is entitled, â€Å"A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson. The title of Olaudah Equiano’s story is â€Å"The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavas Vassa, the African, Written without anyone else. † Captivity accounts test a person’s confidence and their capacity to make due in a particular given circumstance. The two creators must figure out how to make due in an alternate culture. Both want their opportunity, however dread the perils of getaway. Rowlandson depends on her strict solidarity to help her through her anguish, while Equiano depends on his good and inevitably strict solidarity to help him through his misery. Analyzing these two stories will show likenesses and contrasts in their motivation however will at last show the purpose behind the story which was to influence a person’s perspective. Both Equiano and Rowlandson were carrying on with a standard life until they were torn away. Equiano was carrying on with a cheerful life, making the most of his time experiencing childhood in his town alongside his family. That day reached a conclusion when he and his sister were caught and sold into subjugation. Equiano states, â€Å"One day, when every one of our kin were gone out to their fills in not surprisingly, and just I and my dear sister were gone out, two men and a ladies got over our dividers, and in a second held onto us both, and without giving us an opportunity to shout out, or make opposition, they halted our mouths, and escaped with us in the closest wood† (690). Rowlandson’s account starts with Native Americans assaulting her remarkably upon her home and put a match to it. As Rowlandson endeavors to leave her home, she is caught. Rowlandson states, â€Å"The Indians laid hold of us, pulling me one way, and the youngsters another, and stated, ‘Come oblige us’: I revealed to them they would slaughter me: they replied, on the off chance that I were happy to oblige them, they would not hurt me† (258). The likeness of the two stories is that both were making the most of their lives until they suddenly changed. The thing that matters is that Equiano was a kid, not thinking a lot about the world while Rowlandson was a grown-up and knew the perils of being a pilgrim. The two creators once hostage needed to adjust to their environmental factors. Equiano experienced a wide range of societies before being purchased in Virginia as a slave. Equiano showed himself how to extend his insight in the wake of being educated by Miss Guerin and under the tutelage of a schoolmaster the nuts and bolts of perusing and composing. Equiano states, â€Å"Nor did I leave my benevolent patronesses, the Miss Guerins, without disquiet and lament. They frequently used to instruct me to peruse, and went to considerable lengths to teach me in the standards of religion and the information on God† (703). Equiano’s hunger for information growing up would help lead him to his opportunity. So also, Rowlandson took in the way of life of the locals to assist her with enduring yearning and starvation. â€Å"There came an Indian to them around then with a crate of pony liver. I requested that he give me a piece. ‘What,’ says he, ‘can you eat horse liver? ’ I let him know, I would try†¦so that I was fain to take the rest and eat it as it seemed to be, with the blood about my mouth, but then an exquisite piece it was to me† (266). While both scholarly their new societies, Equiano’s reason for existing was to pick up information to in the long run free him, and Rowlandson’s object was for endurance. Both Equiano and Rowlandson wanted their opportunity, yet in addition dreaded the threats of departure. Equiano was in a humanized region, yet the acknowledgment of being separated from everyone else trying to get back home was decreasing. Equiano communicates, â€Å"I had before engaged any expectations of returning home, and had decided when it ought to be dull to make the endeavor; however I was currently persuaded it was unprofitable, and started to think about that, if conceivable I could get away from every single other creature, I couldn't those of human kind† (692). Rowlandson was in the wild and she had no clue about the fact that she was so near the closest province. As Rowlandson is talking with another English hostage about getting away, she states, â€Å"I wished her not to show away to any methods, for we were almost thirty miles from any English town† (263). Rowlandson dreaded being gotten after break, yet she additionally dreaded of being lost in the wild with the wild creatures. Rowlandson composed, â€Å"Heart-hurting musings here I had about my poor youngsters, who were dissipated here and there among the wild monsters of the forest† (264). The two creators adjusted to environmental factors to assist them with enduring their imprisonment. The two creators need to depend on strict and moral solidarity to assist them with persevering through their bondage. Rowlandson has confidence in Christianity, and that helped her to endure her imprisonment. She thinks everything occurs for an explanation and that God was trying her confidence. Rowlandson in her impression of Psalms cites, â€Å"Oh that my kin had noticed to me, and Israel had strolled in my ways, I ought to before long have repressed their foes, and turned my hand against their adversaries† (265). Then again, Equiano has no information on Christianity in his youth but it wasn’t till his adulthood that he comprehended white Christianity. Equiano knew being a piece of the white Christianity would assist him with procuring his opportunity. Equiano needed to depend on his ethical quality, in the first place, to be free and his strict solidarity to withstand his imprisonment. Equiano composed, â€Å"I view myself as a specific most loved of Heaven, and recognize the benevolent actions of Providence in each event of my life† (688). The two creators legitimize their imprisonment with the beauty of God and that it was a confirmation of their confidence. Imprisonment accounts were well known during the 1700s with numerous perusers. Despite the fact that Equiano and Rowlandson compose their account with bondage as the principle subject, both suffered totally various circumstances. Rowlandson thought she was caught by the savages, yet she understands she was never treated unfairly. Equiano, then again, was as far as anyone knows caught and sold into bondage by the humanized populace, yet he was dealt with unfeelingly. The two creators wanted to open the eyes of others to see the shameful acts of being a hostage.

Girls use labels such as slut, whore, etc. during their cyberbullying attacks while boys mostly make fun of each others appearances and accuse one another of being gay or too fashionable (Holladay, pg.6). A majority of cyberbullying begins when one persons desire for confidence and/or power becomes too strong. Comparative Essay of Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now

Comparative Essay of Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now The ties between Joseph Conrads book, â€Å"Heart of Darkness† and Francis Coppolas movie, â€Å"Apocalypse Now† are unmistakable. Apocalypse Nows correctness in following the story line of the Heart of Darkness is amazing although the settings of each story are from completely different location and time periods. From the jungle of the Congo in Africa to the Nung river in Vietnam, Joseph Conrads ideals are not lost. In both the book and the movie, the ideas of good and evil, whiteness, darkness, and racism are clear. Also, characterization in both the novel and the movie are very similar. The good does not always triumph. Sometimes the dark side overcomes what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature. This quote explains what General Corman bel ieves is the good and evil in every human and how the good is the rational thinking. While the evil is an irrational thinking. Traditional interpretations of light and darkness tend to associate light with goodness and purity, and darkness with evil and corruption. Marlow describes his interpretation of the darkness in his journey with these words, True, by this time it was not a blank space any more...a place of darkness. But there was in it one river especially, a mighty big river... resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land...the snake had charmed me. (p. 11) However, in Heart of Darkness, the definitions of lightness and darkness has been reversed. Darkness can be interpreted to stand for the purity and innocence of the natives lifestyle, while lightness can be seen as the corruption, greed, and exploitative ways of the white men. Open Editorial in Business Informatics- myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about theOpen Editorial in Business Informatics for Catholic Social. Answer: Human dignity is one of the most important principles of the 9 principles of Catholic social thought. In different nations of the world, the political consensus has considered the protection of dignity as the most significant principle for the progress of the society. Different organisations and business have often paid importance for the protection of dignity and human rights of different consumers over the years (Amaboldi and Coggett 2016). Although it has been one of the most important ethical ways of conducting business, there are evidence of arising issue of the media companies and social networking sites over the years which are hampering the human dignity and affecting the common good of the people. The rights of human dignity can be explained as the essential sense of self worth and self respect which are possessed by different individuals of a particular country. It mainly helps in respecting the different beliefs values and wishes of all the different citizens acting as consumers in the business and thereby not pressing others belief on them just for the sense of making more profit (Schiffes et al. 2014). Over the years, business has provided a source for progress and betterment of citizens and the quality of life experienced by them. The ethical framework of every country states that all the business should be done maintaining the human dignity and respecting the integrity of social systems, laws of the country as well as different ecosystems for the people who live in the nation for common good. A debate of free speech is now conducted in the present generation about the power of the media companies. Media companies like the broadcast, print journalism, Internet based on entertainment companies are utilising the right to speak for a particular individual in their own ways for making their channel more popular as well as to earn more profit. Often, it is seen that different individuals on the social media websites and different applications proposed by the companies, state their own opinion regarding a particular issue in the country (Jin and Feenberg 2015). This opinion are often been manipulated in different ways by the media companies to earn more attention from the social circle of the nation. This can be stated with the help of an example. When a particular opinion of a celebrity is taken in an interview, the different Internet based companies utilise this information in their own ways, manipulating and creating exciting contents and backgrounds either creating anger or hatred or even appreciation from the citizens according to their own benefits. If they want to promote a celebrity they often use the speech of the celebrity with articles and blogs that promote his popularity. When they try to degrade a celebrity for their own benefit, they utilise information stated by the celebrity in negative aspects thereby earning more visit on their page by the people on the social circle (Serazio 2015). This has long questioned that the activities done by the media companies actually harming the dignity of the people pressuring their own thoughts over the common citizens. When the media companies are asked about the diplomacy of their work, they opine that they are only doing this for the common good by bringing information stated by some of the greatest leaders, film star, politicians, and influential people of the world to the common people (Serazio 2015). However there remains a concern that are they really applying the true sense of the comments made by the influential people in the correct sense or manipulating the tone and the feeling of the information stated by the influential people? Facebook and Twitter have always claimed that they are not responsible for whatever appears on their site but are the work of the respective sites with whom they are linked with. Such an irresponsible attitude of the media companies are highly criticized as they are acting as the medium of the distribution of the information not only to the adults but also the children and the adolescents who are the future of the nation. The moulding of their minds as well as the development of their skills and thinking capabilities depend upon the various articles they see on the media sites. Therefore it is extremely important for the media based organisations to follow an ethical Framework where the information they are posting for the common good of the people should align with the betterment of the nation and at the same time they should be respecting the human dignity of all the influential people of the nation and also of the common people (Stone and Woodcock 2014). They should not publish an y articles for gaining profits and benefits but in turn should look for the greater good helping in shaping mind for future betterment of the nation. There Are Many Labels, Names And Categories That Essays

There are many labels, names and categories that have been assigned or given to lesbians. What is"lesbian"? Is it a certain type of woman? Does one lesbian have an identical feature or character as another lesbian? Does a lesbian have something extra or something missing from heterosexual women? This notion that we can classify a human being by their sexual preference is absolutely ludicrous and unsubstantiated! Women are just that, women. Sexual attraction to humans, be it the same sex or not, is not a concrete science that can allow society to label women. The choice of heterosexuality may not truly be a choice. In a recent survey of women, 57% stated that heterosexuality was not something that was considered and then chosen. For these women, there was no decision to be made regarding their sexual preference (Marrow, 1997). This is an interesting figure when you consider of those above women, some admitted to having sexual encounters with other women. I believe the choice is heavily tied to our culture, family values, and surroundings. If all of the fish are swimming upstream, why would you want to go against your group and swim downstream? Within the lesbian community, Ponse (1978) makes reference to two groups. There are many lesbians that claim to have been "born" lesbian. To expand on this subject, one would say these women never questioned their sexual attraction. From day one, they were attracted to other women. Although this is referred to as a primary lesbian, I don't believe it alleviates any of the stigmas or gives any more comfort or ease to the woman. The elective lesbian is seen as having "elected" to be lesbian. These are women who have experienced heterosexual relations and have decided that they prefer the same sex. This may appear as a choice, but it is far from that. The environment or family setting may have driven these women to repress their true desires out of fear of rejection. They may also simply be confused and needed to try one way to better understand the other way (Golden, 1999). Among lesbian relationships, we find the data to be similar to heterosexual women. This makes sense and gives more bearing to the thought that women are women. Lesbian couples, like their heterosexual couples, prefer monogamous relationships when in a deep and caring relationship. Lesbian couples appear to want and most importantly, expect the same things from a relationship as a heterosexual woman (Garnets, 2000). Commitment, support, and family values. There are those that will claim lesbian couples cannot possibly have or want family values since they are not themselves a true family. This is a comical statement to me when we consider it is men who have defined "family values" throughout the years. It is obvious that there are differing opinions regarding lesbians. Their life style, their beliefs and their choices have all been analyzed, scrutinized and classified, but to the result of what? Does a woman's sexual preference affect anyone but that person? Then why is our society so intent on labeling, understanding and discriminating against lesbians? Could it be that anger is a concealment of personal repressed sexual preferences? The time has come for humans to act like humans and treat our species the same, regardless of sexual preference. After all, sexual preference does not impact intellect levels, work ethics, or honesty in a person. Why Professional Editing Matters

Why Professional Editing Matters In this day and age of technology and the faster is better credo, good writing seems to have fallen by the wayside. You write texts and messages with abbreviations, incomplete sentences, and emoticons. Informal writing seems to have run rampant and become more acceptable. Yet, proper and effective formal writing has never been as integral to keeping up and excelling in this ultra-competitive world. You know that writing is a difficult thing to do, even for professionals. Your stomach churns and you feel a sense of dread when a professor gives you a college essay to write, when your boss asks you to prepare a presentation at a meeting, or when you work on crafting the perfect cover letter for your dream job.But now it is more important than ever to have good writing skills and well-written documents, whether they are for business, personal, non-profit, academic, or job search-related use. You need to present yourself in the best way possible- to avoid embarrassing mistakes, to get that job, to get into a top-rated school, to make an effective presentation at work, or to raise awareness and much-needed money for a charity cause. What do editing and proofreading services entail?Theres more to editing and crafting a good paper than meets the eye. When a document is edited and proofread, the following corrections and modifications are made:Fix spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and verb tense mistakes.Improve sentence structure.Adhere to particular style guide rules.Enhance clarity and improve flow.Reorganize paragraphs.Fix awkward wording and find the perfect words.Correct ESL mistakes. The types of editing and the differences between themHow many types of editing are there? The simple answer to that question is two: editing and proofreading. But one can also argue that there are three main categories: editing, proofreading, and copyediting. Then there are the specialized subcategories, such as book manuscript and dissertation editing.Editing is more comprehensiv e and substantive, and it focuses on the style, flow, and subject area of your document and may require specialization. Proofreading focuses on going over each line of text and making sure all punctuation marks are in the right places, and that there are no spelling and grammar mistakes.Copyediting is not as widely-known; it is typically found in publishing, and may be done in addition to traditional editing and proofreading. It usually occurs before proofreading; the copyeditor checks for grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes, and looks at overall style issues and specific style guide adherence (e.g., Turabian, MLA, APA).Can you do the editing yourself or do you need someone to help you?You need a second pair of eyes to spot mistakes and typos, to clean up, polish, and improve your writing. You need an outsiders point of view because you are simply too close to your own text. There are typos, gaps, and awkward wording and structure that you wont even notice. Your writing or s tory may sound clear and error-free to you, but you may be incorrect. You need a fresh perspective and point-of-view. Famous novelists and writers have resorted to some weird tricks to get this much-needed new perspective. Virginia Woolf allegedly wrote on an angled three-and-a-half-foot tall desk so she could read her work both up-close and at a distance. You dont need to go to such extremes; hiring a professional editor will also do the trick. Why you cant find all of your own writing mistakesIt all boils down to science. As Mics Eric Brodwin explains, there are two main reasons for this discrepancy:This is your brain on writingWhen you think creatively, you use different parts of the brain than when you think with more routine traditional tasks. Studies by radiologist Martin Lotze of the University of Greifswald in Germany have shown that your brain concentrates more on formulating and communicating complex ideas and thoughts, and not on less complicated, simpler areas of writing s uch as spelling and other typos. Psychologist Tom Stafford, who studies typos at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, states in Wired, When youre writing, youre trying to convey meaning. Its a very high-level task. This is your brain on editingYou dont see typos in your own work. You see what you want to see. As Nick Stockton explains in Wired, The reason we dont see our own typos is because what we see on the screen is competing with the version that exists in our heads. You are too close to the text, you know what you have (or intended) to write, so you dont have a fresh perspective. Glaring omissions and mistakes escape your eyes. You think everything looks good in your document, but little do you know. This graphic demonstrates why it is difficult (if not impossible) to catch all of your own typos.Examples of embarrassing mistakes todayNewspapers and other media often contain attention-garnering typos. Los Angeles Times writer Steve Harvey said in 2004, Over the yea rs, readers have sent me ads with such spectacular malapropisms as Chip and Dale furniture, Floor Shine shoes, Waynes Coating, Chester Drawers and Rod Iron. (Translation: Chippendale, Florsheim, wainscoting, chest of drawers and wrought iron.)Why editing is a big dealTo illustrate the importance of editing and the difficulty you face finding typos in writing (especially in your own), Danny Rubin created a quiz for NY Times readers. He inserted 14 errors into five articles. See how carefully you read and if you can find them all! What professional editing can do for youEditing can actually be just as important as the writing itself, and it can take more time than writing. They will take your document to the next level.Small errors, big consequencesHere are two examples of how seemingly simple writing errors can have costly consequences:The printer of the 1632 edition of the Wicked Bible was fined  £300 ($52,000 today) for the omission of the word not in the seventh commandment, Thou shalt commit adultery. That one mistake changed the entire meaning of the commandment. The printer not only faced a hefty fine, but his license was also suspende d.There is also the Canadian case in which a single comma enabled one party to exit the contracts arrangement with a single-years notice, instead of the originally intended five-year term. The cost of this blunder was one million Canadian dollars. The election process is not immune from costly editing errors either. The clerk of Ottawa County in Michigan had to apologize in 2010 for two errors that were made on election ballots in four years. Two candidates names were missing from absentee ballots mailed to approximately 1,400 voters. Reprints cost $48,570. Another ballot error in 2006 cost more than $48,000 in reprints. The letter L was omitted from the word public on a proposal on the ballot.Famous words of wisdom – My favorite editing quotesHere are some words of wisdom that perfectly capture why you need editing, especially professional editing, for your important written documents. You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others whats burning inside you, and we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.Arthur PlotnikAn editor should tell the author his writing is better than it is. Not a lot better, a little better.T. S. EliotEditing might be a bloody trade, but knives arent the exclusive property of butchers. Surgeons use them too.Blake MorrisonWhat are your favorite quotes about editing? To sum it all upSimply put, good writing requires good editing. Editing and proofreading are challenging and time-consuming jobs to do. So it is best to have your document professionally edited. English Writing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

English Writing - Essay Example The only choices are to ride on it, to suppress it or subvert it. In my case, I have usually been fortunate enough to be able to ride on it. Since my early childhood at study or play I have always been the popular choice whenever the question of leadership came up. I could always be counted upon to start off with things that hadn't been done before and soon have a bunch of other people happily doing the same. A few disagreed, of course, but I was frequently able to win them over, sooner rather than later. I have always been seen as fair, capable and full of common sense. Being a leader has thus become a second nature to me, and my passion. Nothing pleases me more than being able to chart a course for a worthy cause. When I joined school a year back, I was immediately intrigued with the prospect of establishing an International Business Club, the environment seemed ripe for one. I threw up the idea at different forums, and got a positive response. With that vote of confidence I threw all my energies into putting together a club that would harness the potential of students while providing a positive platform for interaction. In the beginning I had few takers for the idea, some thought it was too ambitious, others found it impossible. But I held on, tackling tonnes of club paperwork while still coming to grips with studies.

Reflective analysis of counselling practice task Essay

Reflective analysis of counselling practice task - Essay Example Such behaviour annoyed her sister, and they were not in good terms since then. My aim in this counselling session was to assist the client never to be such emotional and depressed. In this context, I was to get the real cause of the depression and emotional that appeared on my client’s face to help me effectively counsel the client. However, I realised I was so inconsistent with the client-centred theory as the client was willing to talk and share a lot with me but the best I offered was a mere hug. For example, I kept on saying ‘Mhhh’ instead of inquiring and looking for best strategies counsel my client by showing empathy and congruence. I terribly failed to assist my client. I was so inconsistent and asked questions out of the client-centred theory such as whether she was still willing to talk to her sister who was unhelpful. I realised that the emotional degree in the client shuttered my session and could never appreciate the congruence and empathy as outlined by the client-centred theory. In my session, I failed to be driven by the three key pillars of client-centred theory as empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence. I never appreciated the fact that every individual has internal resources necessary for the growth and, therefore, my person-centred counselling approach would have helped me provide the three mentioned pillars that help realised such stated growth. In mind, throughout the session I failed to appreciate the principle view of person-centred approach to counselling that an individual client is perceived as there own best authority on the experience as well as it perceives the client, the client in this case as being fully capable of fulfilling her own potential for growth. Rodgers says, ‘If am truly open to the way life is experienced by another person†¦. If I can take his other world into mine, then I risk seeing life in his or her way†¦ and of being

Bill of Rights Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Bill of Rights - Coursework Example There is also the danger that individual rights of speech and assembly and redressal of grievances can be used by canny citizens to trouble others, for example, the encouragement of an intrusive media, and unnecessary litigation in courts of law. While such a clause may have been necessary for the security of the individual in pioneering days (this is also debatable, as these arms were often trained on the original inhabitants-the Red Indians-who have today been unjustly herded into settlements, in their own land) now, it has led to lawlessness: shooting sprees in malls and schools, for instance. Fourth: This amendment was enacted to ensure privacy as well as protection against unlawful or malicious action against citizens by the agents of the state, which may also be seen as the benefit accruing to a citizen from it. There are circumstances when exceptions to the amendment become justified for the sake of the security of the state and citizenry. These exceptions are, for example, detainment and search of a person who behaves in a suspicious manner, or searching of persons in sensitive areas like airports/ border areas. As a matter of fact, the 9/11 incident possibly happened because of adhering strictly to the spirit of this amendment, whereby travellers at airports were not checked thoroughly. The advantage to the citizen was that it was fair to him. ... Fifth: This amendment was enacted to ensure fair treatment of the individual who is charged with a crime. The advantage to the citizen was that it was fair to him. Even a citizen charged for a crime has a right to be fairly treated, especially in the event that he is wrongly charged. The disadvantage is that a canny lawyer could use the amendment to subvert the justice system. Eg, in the OJ Simpson case, the criminal case against Simpson absolved him of the murder of his wife, Nicole, while civil proceedings held him culpable! Sixth: The amendment like the fifth was enacted to prevent arbitrary treatment of an accused, and to ensure justice for all. This is an excellent provision governing the justice system, to safeguard a citizen's rights, and to ensure speedy disposal of cases. Any negative feature of this could come about not because of the amendment per se, but because of the way the system could be perverted by those seeking to take advantage of it. (eg perverting the law by canny lawyers to adhere to the letter of it minus the spirit.) Seventh: England had courts of common law, which gave legal (monetary) relief, and courts for equity which decided non-monetarily (an injunction, for instance) This amendment sought to combine both the jurisdictions. The advantage or disadvantage of the amendment depends totally on the complications involved in a case-especially where both equity and common law elements are involved. Complexity in the actual application of the amendment is inevitable, not because of anything contained within it, but because judicial disaputes are essentially complicated. Eighth: This amendment was enacted to ensure humane treatment of a crimininal, and herein lay its strong point. But a habitual

Mark Twain, The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Essay -- essays researc

In the novel by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the two main characters, Huck and Jim, are strongly linked. Their relation is portrayed by various sides, some of them good and some others bad. But the essential interest of that relation is the way that uses the author to describe it. Even if he had often been misunderstood, Twain always implied a message behind the themes developed around Huck and Jim. The first encounter between Huck Finn and Jim is at the beginning of the book, when Huck’s friend, Tom Sawyer, tries to fool Jim, Miss Watson’s slave. Huck and Jim still don’t know each other, but Huck isn’t biased against the old slave. It’s an important point because, as racism was a widely held mentality in the South, we can learn that that young boy was more open-minded than most people there. Later, they find themselves in the same situation. As they were escaping from the civilized world, they take refuge in the Jackson’s Island, on the Mississippi river. Huck is running away from a bad father and Jim has leaved Miss Watson because he didn’t want to be sold to New Orleans. Soon after joining Jim on the island, Huck begins to realize that Jim has more talents and intelligence than Huck has been aware of. Jim knows "all kinds of signs" about the future, people's personalities, and weather forecasting. Huck finds this kind of information necessary as he and Jim drift down the Mississippi on a raft. As important, Huck feels a comfort with Jim that he has not felt with the other major characters in the novel. With Jim, Huck can enjoy the best aspects of his earlier influences. Jim's meaning to Huck changes as they proceed through their adventure. He starts out as an extra person just to take on the journey, but they transform into a friend. "It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger."(chap. XV) Huck tries to squeal on Jim but can't because he remembers that Jim called him "de bes' fren' I ever had;...de on'y white genlman dat ever kep' his promise to ole Jim."(chap. XVI) Huck reali zes that he can not turn Jim in since they both act as runaway outcasts on the river. The support they have for each other sprouts friendship. As does the Widow, Jim allows Huck security, but Jim is not as confining as is the Widow. Like Tom Sawyer, Jim is intelligent but his intelligence ... ...cial bigot, Tom. In addition, both sacrifices have as a consequence a life of everlasting hell. When Huck sacrifices himself for Jim, he accepts a literal hell (that is truly the path to heaven). Jim, on the other hand, accepts a life of figurative hell in slavery, when he is in fact free all along. Finally, each sacrifice shares irony, in that they were both based on unknown pieces of unknown, but significant pieces of information. Huck is unaware that his decision of accepting "hell" will actually lead to his salvation and ironically decides on doing what the thinks is "wrong." Likewise, Jim is unaware that he is free, and is not risking his freedom in saving Tom. In making these two brave sacrifices, Huck and Jim achieve a higher character than if they had chosen easier paths. Huck's willingness to face hell to protect Jim and Jim's willingness to face capture and slavery to save Tom, both contribute to the overall theme of racial equality/inequality present throughout the book. Huck and Jim's journey down the Mississippi River has led them to look past colour boundaries, and discover that "all me are created equal."

Is Harry Potter evil? Essay

The answer to this most controversial book and movie series is a no. Harry Potter books were all about the fight between evil and good. It did a lot of wonders and spectacular creativity on ways of entertaining a child’s imagination by magic tricks and spells. Just like when we hire magicians and entertainers on kiddies birthday parties. Today’s technology after all is about yesterday’s magic like Merlin and science fiction semi horror stories of the Underworld. The fight for censorship deals with everything about the concept of witchcraft, violence, satanism and deception. Matrix prove to be violent also and deceptive of the real world. True to its word, the only perceived danger is fantasy. Kids are kids and they fantasize often. Observe how they conduct their games and play at home. One can see that they are all pure fantasies. Can we not give them the freedom to exercise what is appropriate to their age without banning books because of the claim of distorting fantasy from reality? Even mere comic books of super heroes and Xmen were created out of fantasy. Shall we ban them then because of scientific fantasy of Xmen mutation? (Bloom 1999). Parents of course have every right to participate in any group and in any legal way to promote the welfare and education of their kids. And yes, they can definitely take a fight to banning books in relation to this protection concept. Both schools and parents shall have a face-to-face discussion with the topic on hand. No one shall dictate the other. It shall all be based on reason and the practicality of the subject being fought upon. Taking on a kid’s story too seriously could be hazardous to society. Witches, wizards, sorcery, and spells have long been in the category of children’s literature. The use of magic potions and spells has long been engaged in the story of Alice in the Wonderland and Snow White. The only difference is that Harry Potter movies seem to be the rage at present costing us more to buying books and DVD’s for our kids. The creativity is just exemplary. The sounds and the way they do their magic are just fantastic. It is never a sin to admire creativity nor is it a sin to express appreciation. There was never a quantitative study of the effects of Harry Potter’s movies and books on children. There was never a quantitative measure of negative implications on behavior by those who admire the cultural phenomenon chronology of manipulation of evil and its consequence. Talking about voices and banning, then parents do promote the culture of criticizing exploring fantasies and curbing creativity in movie productions and children’s skills to emulate their feelings to good stories. After all, shaping of a child’s behavior is seen to stem from his family context and environment. That means more on dealing with people attitudes and witnessing to assessing what parents teach and not from entertainment and media except for the very delicate condition of being mentally impaired. Parental guidance is the primordial concern of culture development and values teaching. Kids do know they are just plain movies not to be taken seriously. References Bloom, J. (1999, October 22).
